Prague Pride 2019 paying tribute to Stonewall 50: fun, sweet memories & great beer

Prague Pride is joining the vast family of prides who will this year reflect the 50th anniversary of Stonewall riots and celebrate the achievements of the LGBT+ movement. As the Czech Republic had a specific LGBT history due to the Iron Curtain, we will focus on the legacy of the past, relevance for today and our responsibility for future generations. Prague Pride 2019 will take place from 5 till 11 August, the Pride Parade will march through the city on Saturday 10 August.

The program features drag shows, vogue dancing and other iconic forms of queer culture. At the same time, Prague Pride maintains a strong human rights focus, which this year translates into an outdoor photo exhibition of important artefacts related to Czech queer history, discussions at the Pride House, many of which will be translated into English, or a special program focused on LGBT seniors and intergenerational understanding. The festival takes a whole week and will offer over 100 events.

Opening concert

Prague Pride 2019 will start on Monday 5 August with an opening concert in the Pride Village located on Střelecký island in the center of Prague, with stunning views of the National Theater, the Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. The line-up includes performers of different generations, such as 80 year old Polish DJ Wika. The main star of the concert will be Daniela Sea, an actress, musician and activist famous for her transgender character Max from The L Word TV series. She will perform in a DJ duo with Gunn Lundemo, a Swedish DJ.

Weekend program

Last year, Prague Pride introduced vogue dancing to Czech audience and the unique extravaganza was met with great enthusiasm. Therefore Pride Ball is coming to Prague again; this time the show moves to a big tent in Pride Park at Letna (Saturday 10 August). In Pride Park, a rich program will run after the Parade featuring Canadian electro-violinist and singer Denique, Ugandan activist music group Rainbow Riots, British popstar Lucy Whittaker, Italian popstar Alex Palmieri, American guitarist and singer Jennifer Corday, and many others. Innovations are planned for the Pride Park, such as a bigger VIP zone, a Ferris Wheel, and a Community Zone with discussions and speed dating for those who don’t fancy big crowds by the music stages.

The drag scene will be present not only through drag queens but also drag kings coming from the Great Britain and through a new generation of emerging Czech drag artists. Drag shows will take place in the Pride Village, in the Pride Park after the Parade (Cookie Kunty, Katy Baehm, Egypt), and at Beaver queer femme party on Friday, 9 August (Pecs Drag Kings all-female/non-binary theatre and cabaret company, UK).

Parade & Pride Park

The Pride Parade starts on Saturday 10 August at St. Wenceslas Square at noon. The reconstruction of the main square in Prague has ended and we are returning to our favorite route leading through the stunning Na Příkopě Street with palaces, international shops and many trees. The parade will head to the Pride Park at Letna, where the entertainment will go on till 10pm. Those wanting to enjoy the program in full comfort with a welcome drink, open bar and super clean toilets can buy VIP zone tickets (available from June).

Official Prague Pride afterparty

After the end of the official program on Letna, you can move to Pride Official Afterparty - Dirty Dirty Dancing Vol 5. The party will again take place on the Altenburg 1964, a cargo ship transformed into a night club; the location of the ship has changed, however, and the new anchoring spot enjoys more comfy and attractive surroundings.

The Prague Pride festival closes off with a Pride Picnic in the Pride Village on Sunday, 11 August – slow food on a slow afternoon to refresh yourselves after crazy Saturday and to say goodbye to friends.

Information for visitors

Last year, 92,000 visits were recorded at the festival events, with 40,000 people in the Parade and 30,000 people in the Pride Park after the Parade.

Regularly updated information about the festival in English will be available on this website.Follow our Instagram and Twitter accounts, both available in English. Printed Prague Pride maps with English descriptions will be available at the festival as well as the bilingual printed Prague Pride Mag with program tips and more.

Looking forward to having you here guys!
